I made my first trip to Old Town Alexandria last year, July 4th weekend and fell in love! Here are some pictures of Old Town. I love the old building, brick sidewalks, the trolley, peaceful waterfront...love it! They have many shops and places to eat too! I'm sure you'll love it too!!! Enjoy the pictures!

Summer getaways!!!

As many of you know, my boyfriend Peter lives in Northern Virginia, so many of my weekends consist of trips there or him making trips here. The joy of long-distance dating! Due to my job schedule, I'm able to spend many more days in Alexandria than he can spend here. Last Thursday, I started off on my commute to DC. Peter works for a propane lobbying company in DC....one of those Monday-Friday kind of jobs!

I got into DC Thursday afternoon around 4:00. I made my way into the city (I'm brave!)...and settled in at Union Station and got some studying done for my chemistry course, and did a lot of people watching as well! I love people watching...not in a creepy way...just observing the way people interact! Union Station is 1.) Beautiful, 2.)Hectic, and 3.) a experience everyone needs to experience. You have DC people coming through via the Metro system, people shopping in the mall, people rushing to catch the Amtrak train etc. Diverse group of people!

Peter met me there....just a few metro stops from where he works and it was so nice to see him again! Our time a part is not as bad as last year, we are both making the effort to visit as much as possible! From there we grabbed dinner and met some friends out for a friends last night in town. Peter's roommate is leaving town for a new job assignment!

Friday I spent the day studying Chemistry...and exploring some around town. I took some pictures in Old Town, Alexandria which I will upload when I get my camera cord! I love Old Town....beautiful town on the Potomac River. Marina type area with cute shops and restaurants. It was a gloomy morning, but the skies cleared up later in the day! I decided to venture into DC to pick Peter up from work...great plan....get to the city early...park...grab coffee...then get him from work. That great plan was halted by Officer Reid of DC Police. What did I do?!? Illegal right turn...unintentionally! Apparently she felt sorry for this southerner in the city and let me off with a warning! I did make it then to coffee but my nerves were shot! I hate being pulled!

Saturday, Peter's identical twin came to visit! This was the first time I met John since we started dating! We went to the mall in Petagon City and explored a little bit. This picture was taken at the Washington Nationals game Saturday night! Most of our pictures are together at the baseball game!!! It was a gorgeous cool night....perfect weather for baseball....but again, is there ever bad weather for baseball?!?
(Notice the Capitol building in the background!!!)
Sunday was a new experience for me....Peter, John and I met some friends at the NRA Range....National Rifle Association shooting range. The guys were getting ready for their African Safari...and I was taught how to shoot. I shot a rifle two times...one time I hit the target! Pretty good if you ask me! It was scary at first....but it felt great! I was smiling ear to ear! I have one of the shells to remember my experience!

I really like DC...it's a big scary place with lots of traffic and lots of people....but it's also exciting to me! It's something I've never experienced before....defiantly not anything like Salisbury, Greensboro, Greenville or Chapel Hill, NC! These are places I've spent part of my life! I'm looking forward to experiencing more of what the city has to offer...and who knows what will happen! :-)

Souvenirs:
Warning ticket from DC Police Officer Reid

New friends
Memories to last a lifetime!

Biochemistry!

Beautiful sunflowers from the Chapel Hill Farmers Market! These flowers make the studying a little more pleasant!

I enrolled in a Medical Biochemistry course to brush up on chemistry before applying for anesthesia school. Georgetown's School of Nursing prefers this specific course through the University of New England, so there I am! Between work and school...my life is pretty slammed! The chemistry course takes up a lot of my time! Sometimes I'm thinking "WTF!".

Anyways...these songs made me laugh! Ok...back to it....

Green, continued!

Made a new smoothie today...

I'm not a huge orange/grapefruit fan...it's just too citrusy and sour for me! I'm always afraid my face will freeze in the "OMG this is sour face!". I bought a grapefruit the other day with good intention...but it was still sitting in my fruit basket until....

"TA-DAAA"

This smoothie has...1 grapefruit, 1 banana and appox 1 cup frozen mango + 2 handfuls of spinach and 1/2 cup water! It's delicious!!! You can taste the citrus but not the spinach!!!

It looks a little more appealing than my Green Smoothie last night....this smoothie is a more bright color of green vs brown/green. Delicious!

I'm Going GREEN!!!

Nooo....not energy efficient GREEN...but eating GREENS!

I'm on a new diet by Joel Fuhrman, basically a vegetarian/vegan type diet and he suggest having smoothies for breakfast to help get in fruits. Over the last week, I have concurred the smoothie making process...and actually feel "full" until lunchtime!!! YAY!

Dr. Fuhrman's website....http://www.drfuhrman.com/

Today, I had a Oprah "A HA" moment, make a GREEN SMOOTHIE to help add in some veggies to my diet. There are only soooo many salads you can eat...steamed veggies (although sauteed squash/onions/ and zucchini are yummy) etc.

After dinner I decided to make a smoothie...and add SPINACH! I googled it earlier (at work- tiss tiss), and found that adding citrus fruits helps to dull the spinach taste.

(Not my smoothie....but you get the idea!)

So, here I went- (approximately) 1 up fresh strawberries, 2 handfuls of baby spinach, 2 bananas, 1/2 cup water and 1 cup frozen mango! It made 2 servings (or two Jancie servings). Kyla (my roommate) had a glass and approved. You couldn't even taste the spinach!

If you can get past your smoothie being green in color, give it a try! I look forward to making more GREEN SMOOTHIES and trying other fruits/veggie combinations!!!

Until I go more GREEN,

Squirrels attack again!!!

So the other week I noticed the Finley Forest Squirrels had found my bird seed stash and were making a mess on my deck! In an attempt to out smart them, I bought a "Pet Food Container" at Target. I thought $10.00 was a little high, but whatever!! I put the bird seed in the container and put it in my outside closet. A week or so later, I find squirrels running out of the outside closet when I walked up! Squirrels had been CAUGHT DIRTY HANDED! Here are some pictures...

Outside closet...notice all the blue pieces of plastic...
